22 December 2005
The Bike Theft Index 2005 lists the motorcycle makes and models at greatest risk of being stolen.
View the Bike Theft Index 2005.
You can use this index to see how at risk your own bike is, or if you’re in the market for a new bike the index can help you decide which model to go for.
For more in-depth information on bike theft trends see the Extent of Motorcycle Theft research report, published on the Research Development and Statistics website.
Motorcycles most at risk of theft
Bikes are such an easy target for thieves if they are not secured, as they can be all too easily wheeled away or bundled into a van. The snapshot of bike theft given in the Bike Theft Index shows that mopeds, scooters and other smaller-engined bikes are most at risk of theft. More generally, newer bikes are consistently most at risk.
My bike’s at high-risk – what can I do to keep it safe?
If the Index shows that the risk to your bike is high, you should take some action to protect it. The more security measures you can take, the less attractive your bike will be to thieves.
Unfortunately no single product can cover all possibilities, but if you invest in both mechanical and electronic security devices, you will greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of bike theft.
What the Home Office is doing to combat motorcycle theft
By publishing the Bike Theft Index 2005 and the research report today, we aim to encourage manufacturers to improve bike security. However, we’re also working in other ways to bring down bike theft.
We’re working with the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group (MCRG), a group of stakeholders with an interest in driving down this kind of crime, to prevent and reduce bike theft.
We are:
- pressing bike manufacturers to mark parts and fit alarms and immobilisers at the point of manufacture
- producing crime prevention advice for motorcyclists – visit www.secureyourmotor.gov.uk (new window), www.mcrg.org (new window) or read the Steer Clear of Bike Crime leaflet
- pressing manufacturers to provide theft prevention advice with all new bikes
- getting local authorities to make secure bike anchorages available free of charge, both on and off-street
- asking the MCRG to feed-in to the redrafting of our Vehicle Crime Reduction Action Team strategy for the next five years
- looking to work more closely with motorcycle user groups to get messages across to their members
- continuing to work with law enforcement and stakeholders to profile the nature of bike crime, and the perpetrators, and to identify what works in combating it
