Counter-terrorism competition

6 October 2009

We've launched a competition to encourage student architects and designers to find new solutions to deal with the threat of vehicle-borne terrorist attacks.

Entrants will be given a brief based on a fictional site, described as the country's largest nightclub. They will be asked to provide solutions to deal with different styles of vehicle-borne attack, or provide innovative proposals that would allow the nightclub owners to verify which vehicles were entering the site.

Who can enter?

The Public Spaces, Safer Places competition is open to UK students of architecture, design, planning and engineering from the start of the 2009-10 academic year.

This is the second year that the competition has run. It was developed in collaboration with the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (new window) (RSA) the Royal Institute of British Architects (new window) (RIBA), the police National Counter Terrorism Security Office (new window) (NaCTSO) and the Centre for the Protection of the National Infrastructure (new window) (CPNI). There is a £2000 prize fund.

Entries closes on Friday 11 December 2009 and an awards ceremony will be held in April 2010.

Great opportunity for students

Security Minister Lord West said, 'Young designers and innovators are the future of counter-terrorism. The standard of responses last year was very high and I am excited to see what solutions are proposed this year.

'This competition encourages an innovative and creative approach to designing counter-terrorism measures and this year the focus is on mitigating vehicle-borne attacks in a crowded place. It presents a great opportunity for students to make a significant contribution to protecting our country’s crowded places from terrorist attacks.'
