30 June 2007
Police are investigating an incident at Glasgow Airport.
A burning car crashed into the main terminal at Glasgow airport just after 3pm Saturday afternoon, and Strathclyde Police confirm that two people are in custody related to the incident.
One section of the airport was damaged by the fire.
Glasgow Airport has been closed and, as of Saturday evening, all flights were suspended. People were asked not to travel to the airport.
If you're expecting to travel from Glasgow Airport Sunday, please contact your airline for updates, and do not travel to the airport without confirming it has reopened.
Suspect badly burned
Late Saturday, Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Willie Rae said that one of the two suspects arrested was taken to hospital, where he was in critical condition with severe burns.
At the hospital, he said, the injured suspect was found to have a dangerous device on his body. A section of the hospital was evacuated until the device was removed.
Heightened security at other airports
After this attack, travellers at airports throughout the UK should expect increased security, particularly for cars and other vehicles.
Some airports - including Edinburgh - were not permitting any cars to drive into the airport property at all late Saturday.
Before leaving for any UK airport by car, please contact your airline for the latest information regarding your own journey.
