Home Secretary on domestic violence

In the May online issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith writes that she is 'absolutely committed' to ensuring victims of domestic violence get the support they need to heal and stay safe.

She describes a new multi-agency system now in place that brings together police, social services, health agencies and volunteer groups to work closely with women who have been abused, and help them make their way through the legal process.

The government will invest £20m in order to expand the programme across the country.

Helping victims through the process

The help is needed, she writes, because domestic violence is a unique crime.

'The nature of domestic violence, taking place as it does behind closed doors, can mean that victims feel alone, isolated and without anywhere to turn.'

The government wants to make sure injured women and children know that they do have somewhere to turn.
