16 July 2008
The review by Sir Ian Magee looks at how government agencies in different countries share information about crimes and criminals.
The review (new window) was commissioned by John Reid when he was Home Secretary, after a 2007 enquiry into the handling of information about crimes committed by British citizens abroad.
It focuses on the problems inherent in sharing information, and makes suggestions as to what could be done to better protect the public from harm.
The review recommends a package of measures designed to balance protecting the public and protecting privacy.
Great strides have been made
The review was sent to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith who said, 'As Sir Ian recognises, we have made great strides in recent years in the way we collect, share and use information about criminals in order to fight crime and protect the public.
'But there is more to do, and I am committed to pressing forward with further improvements.
'We will be producing a full response and action plan in the autumn, and I will be consulting on Sir Ian's recommendations, including his proposal for the creation of a Commission for Public Protection Information.
'We will immediately press ahead with work to improve access to overseas criminal history information to help deport foreign nationals who break our laws.'
