Disputes

What is a dispute?

A dispute is where an applicant or registered body believes that the content of the information released on the CRB certificate does not relate to the applicant or elements of it are incorrect or irrelevant. There are two types of disputes - data entry dispute and data source dispute.

Data entry dispute

A data entry dispute is where personal information on the CRB certificate appears to be incorrect including:

  • names
  • date of birth
  • gender
  • place of birth
  • address details
  • employers details
  • registered body/countersignatory details

Data source dispute

A data source dispute is where either:

  • conviction details not relating to the applicant have been disclosed on the certificate
  • conviction details relating to the applicant have been disclosed but some elements of the conviction are incorrect
  • the approved information is considered to be inaccurate or irrelevant

In some cases to disassociate the applicant from the criminal record fingerprinting may be required. If this occurs, we will write to the applicant requesting their consent to have their fingerprints taken by their local police force.

How to raise a dispute?

Disputes should normally be raised with the CRB within three months of the date of the issue of the certificate.

The CRB is committed to providing a high standard of customer service and has put in place a process to deal with disputes.
