The function of the Forensic Science Regulator is to ensure that the provision of forensic science services across the criminal justice system is subject to an appropriate regime of scientific quality standards.

Forensic Science Evidence in Question
This article, published in the 'Criminal Law Review' (Issue 5, 2011), adds a sense of perspective to the current debates about the presentation of forensic science evidence in court. Two of the authors, Paul Roberts and Colin Aitken, are working with the regulator on guidance for the presentation of evidence and we hope to be able to publish more in the near future.

New Year recognition
Andrew Rennison, the Forensic Science Regulator, was delighted to see two people who are prominent in UK forensic science recognised in the New Year honours list.
Professor Jack Crane, NI state pathologist, was awarded the CBE for his services to forensic pathology. Mrs June Guiness, forensic science regulation unit, was awarded an OBE for her services to forensic science.
The regulator sends his warm congratulations to them both, and his thanks for their continuing work to improve the quality of forensic science used in our criminal justice systems.

Developing a quality standard for fingerprint examination
This position paper sets out the initial views of the fingerprint quality standards specialist group, which was set up to advise on the standards needed for fingerprint methods. The conclusion is that there should be further discussions and a consultation on a quality standards framework for fingerprints.
