Passports
The Identity and Passport Service provides passport services to British nationals residing in the UK and, in association with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, to those residing overseas.
Passport essentials
You can find everything you'll need to know about getting a passports in the passports section of Directgov.
There you’ll discover the facts on how to:
- renew a passport
- apply for a first passport, a child’s passport or a collective passport
- track progress on your passport application
- report a stolen or lost passport
You'll also find other common queries about eligibility, fees and what to do if you've changed your name.
The idea of a passport has existed since people began to travel from one country to another. Not only is it an aid to travel, but the passport has a traditional role as a document of national identity.
Passport changes
In October 2010, IPS introduced the latest version of the British Passport. It features a new design and improved physical security features. You can read more about this passport in the leaflet 'Introducing the new UK passport'.
Urgent passports
If you need to renew your passport urgently, IPS offers either a:
- fast-track one-week service
- premium one-day service
Both these services require an appointment at a Passport Office. In some cases we may need to take extra time to assess your application, including confirming details you have given and contacting your countersignature.
You should call our advice line to make an appointment on 0300 222 0000.
Specific guidance on child passports
If you are applying for or renewing a child's passport, the Children policy contains detailed information about change of name, parental responsibility, court orders, guardians, surrogate parents and wards of court.
Further information on children looked after by a local authority is available in 'Guidance notes for social services departments when applying for passports on behalf of children in their care'.
