What you can do
We work with the police and the security service to keep everyone in the UK safe from terrorism, but you can help too. This section explains more about what you can do to keep yourself safe.
Always report suspicious activity
While it’s important that we all go about our daily business normally, it’s also sensible to remain alert to danger and to report any suspicious activity you see or hear.
Staying safe when travelling
Increased security measures are in place at all UK airports. Find out about what items you can carry in your hand luggage, and other ways your journey may be affected on the Department for Transport website (new window).
What you know can help
If you know of a threat to national security or you want to report suspicious activity, there are several ways to reach us:
- in an emergency call 999
- call the police counter-terrorism hotline on 0800 789 321
- contact the Security Service (MI5) directly (new window)
You can remain anonymous, and you may save lives.
What to do in a major emergency
- if you're at the scene of an incident - follow the instructions of the emergency services
- if you're not at the scene but feel you may be affected by the incident - Go in, Stay in and Tune in - go indoors, stay there, and tune in to local radio and TV, which will provide information and advice
Be prepared
It's very unlikely you will ever find yourself caught up in a terrorist attack. But it's good to know what you can do should it ever happen.
