'Inspection Reform: Establishing an Inspectorate for Justice, Community Safety and Custody' Policy Statement

This policy statement outlines the Government’s proposal for the design of a single inspectorate for justice, community safety and custody.  The new inspectorate will bring together the five current inspectorates for police, probation, courts administration, prisons and the Crown Prosecution Service.  

The statement describes what the Government believes an inspection regime should look like if it is to inspect and reflect a modernised, joined up justice system focused on reducing crime and re-offending and promoting public confidence.  The new inspectorate will be a unified, strongly led and forward looking organisation that builds on the excellent work the current five inspectorates have done to create a dynamic regime that examines the justice system as a whole, focusing the treatment and condition of those in closed institutions and the quality of service received by service users as they pass through the system. 

The proposals take into consideration comments received as a result of the consultation exercise launched in March.  A synopsis of responses is at annex B.
