Consulation on bribery: the original bribery consultation paper and a summary of the responses it received

This consultation is now closed.

The purpose of this consultation on bribery was to seek views on reform of bribery law and on a new proposal to enhance Serious Fraud Office powers to tackle bribery of foreign public officials.

The existing law on bribery is comprised of the common law offence of bribery and from a variety of statutory offences dating as far back as 1889.

The Government published a draft Corruption Bill in 2003 as a means of modernising and consolidating the existing law. However, the bill suffered criticism when it received pre-legislative scrutiny by a joint committee of both houses.  We published our response in December 2003 in which we said that the bill would be revised with a view to introducing it when parliamentary time permits.  This consultation sought views on options for taking foward reform of the law.

The original consultation paper and the summary of responses to it are published below.
