Private freight searching and fingerprinting at Juxtaposed Controls - Consultation Document

The Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 provides for the Secretary of State to contract out powers to search a ship, aircraft or vehicle for the purpose of identifying individuals who an immigration officer may wish to examine. The Act also amends existing legislation to enable those detained, under paragraph 16 of the Immigration Act 1971, to be fingerprinted and for the storage of those prints. The Government now intends to deploy these powers at the juxtaposed controls in France and Belgium. The Nationality Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 requires the Secretary of State to undertake a public consultation prior to the introduction of new powers at certain juxtaposed controls. Consequently this consultation invites comments related to the implementation of contracted out searching and fingerprinting at the juxtaposed controls.

Note: This consultation is now closed to responses.
