Drugs and children

Drug abuse can damage a child's ability to go to school, to succeed and to live a normal life.

At worst, substanceĀ abuseĀ can ruin a child's life. At best it can limit their ability to learn and succeed.

Use of drugs will not only affects the user, but also their family, friends and everyone in their life.

Our drug strategy for young people (new window) offers guidance and advice for children and parents coping with the effects of substance misuse through a range of approaches:

  • prompt access to treatment for drug-misusing parents
  • intervention programmes to improve parenting skills and educating about the risks of drug-misuse
  • providing care and safety for children affected by drug-misuse
  • ensuring children do not end up parenting themselves
