Child protection to be part of new crime agency

Child protection to be strengthened when Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) becomes part of National Crime Agency.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

CEOP will operate across the UK and internationally in the powerful new crime fighting agency but will retain its unique brand, model and operational control.

It will also maintain a separate budget, and have a governance structure which allows it to sustain innovative partnerships with the private sector and charities.

Resources and support

Minister for crime prevention James Brokenshire said: ‘Child protection is an absolute priority for this government.

‘As a core part of the new National Crime Agency, CEOP will not only be in the best possible position to continue its vital work but will also benefit from being able to draw on the resources and support available across the whole agency.

‘CEOP has been an amazing success and this government will always back its vital work.’

Thousands arrested

CEOP’s work protecting children and young people off and online has seen over 620 children safeguarded and 1131 people arrested since the agency was established in April 2006.

More than 250 high risk sex offender networks have been dismantled.

The past few weeks saw two major operational successes. Those operations - Rescue and Alpine - collectively saw 192 children safeguarded and 332 suspects arrested in the UK alone.
