Home Secretary responds to Pathway ruling

Home Secretary releases statement in response to the decision by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission to allow men to remain in UK.

The Home Secretary has released a statement in response to the decision by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) to allow two men connected to the ‘Pathway’ case - in which a number of people in the northwest of England were arrested under the Terrorism Act in April 2009 - to remain in the UK.

SIAC ruled that two Pakistani nationals, Abid Naseer and Ahmad Faraz Khan, pose a threat to UK national security.

However, the court found that the UK cannot deport them to Pakistan because it judged there were insufficient safeguards for them in that country and they could face mistreatment on their return.

The Home Secretary’s statement

The Home Secretary Theresa May said, ‘Protecting the public is the government’s top priority.

‘We are disappointed that the court has ruled that Abid Naseer and Ahmad Faraz Khan should not be deported to Pakistan, which we were seeking on national security grounds. As the court agreed, they are a security risk to the UK.

‘We are now taking all possible measures to ensure they do not engage in terrorist activity.’
