This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The Chief Constable of Cumbria Police was appointed to the job by Her Majesty the Queen.

The Home Secretary made her recommendation to the Palace after conducting the final interview alongside London Mayor Boris Johnson and Metropolitan Police Service Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe.

Mr Mackey has a 27-year career in the police, serving across the country. He has been Chief Constable in Cumbria since 2007.

Home Secretary Theresa May said: ‘I am delighted to announce the appointment of Craig Mackey as the new deputy commissioner.

‘It has been a period of big change for the Metropolitan Police, but this decision completes a very strong team at the head of the country’s biggest force.

‘He brings a wealth of experience to one of the most challenging jobs in policing.’

As well as the final panel of the Home Secretary, the Mayor and the Commissioner, Mr Mackey was also interviewed by a Home Office panel and the metropolitan police authority.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘Craig Mackey has a strong track record in public order and will bring a new dynamism to the role of deputy commissioner.

‘We have an exciting year ahead, with major operations tackling gangs and serious youth violence, plus the challenge of policing the Olympic Games.

‘I’m sure Craig Mackey will prove to be a real asset in driving the Met from strength to strength in 2012.’

Metropolitan police service commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said: ‘I am looking forward to working with Craig, he has a strong record as Chief Constable in Cumbria during some very testing times, his experience as the ACPO lead and the race equality portfolio, which includes stop and search and the monitoring of police powers, mean he has experience across the board.

‘I have no doubt on his ability to help us deliver world class policing that Londoners can be proud of. ‘
