Section 153 of the Equality Act gives the government a power to impose specific duties on certain public bodies to help them perform the Equality Duty more effectively.

Draft specific duties regulations were laid before Parliament on 27 June 2011. These were debated in the House of Commons(Opens in a new window) (Opens in a new window) (Opens in a new window) (Opens in a new window) (Opens in a new window) (Opens in a new window) (Opens in a new window) on 11 July 2011 and debated in the House of Lords on 6 Spetember 2011. The specific duties came into force on 10 September, following parliamentary approval.

The specific duties apply to English public bodies and the non-devolved functions of GB-wide public bodies.  The specific duties will help deliver better performance of the public sector Equality Duty by reducing bureaucracy, and increasing transparency and democratic accountability across the public sector.
