These candidate briefings look at the national context for the police and crime commissioner (PCC), covering the role of key government departments and relevant agencies, and some important strands of operational (public order and international police assistance) and administrative work.
Overall policy responsibility for crime and policing in England and Wales lies with the Home Secretary. The PCC will also need to be aware of several bodies related to various aspects of policing, such as the College of Policing and the National Police Air Service, whose activities and decisions will affect all forces.
On the criminal justice side, the key roles are those of the Secretary of State for Justice and the Attorney General.
Addressing the issue on reduced budgets across all areas of the public sector, the briefings on reducing bureaucracy (coming soon) and value for money set out the work that is being carried out centrally to support the streamlining of policing, including appropriate engagement with the private sector.
