Home Office Research Report 12 - The Gateway Protection Programme: an evaluation

Key implications
Executive summary
Main report

Research evaluating progression towards integration was conducted with four groups of refugees (53 men and 76 women in total), resettled in four UK locations (Sheffield, Bolton, Hull and Rochdale), between 2004 and 2006, under the Gateway Protection Programme.

Data were collected longitudinally up to 18 months after resettlement with two groups, and once at 10 months after resettlement with the other groups.

Gateway appears to be effective in meeting refugees’ basic material and orientation needs. The refugees remained glad to have been resettled and there was evidence of progress towards integration for many. Married women with children were making least progress. The main challenges (development of adequate English language skills and limited employment opportunities) applied to all groups.
