Asylum
We grant asylum to individuals if they can show a well-founded fear of persecution in a particular country because of their:
- race
- religion
- nationality
- political opinion
- membership of a particular social group
This is in accordance with the 1951 United Nations’ Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.
If the applicant does not qualify for asylum, we consider whether there are humanitarian or discretionary reasons for them to remain in the UK.
