Enforcement
Our enforcement strategy aims to ensure people comply with our immigration laws. We remove the most harmful people first and deny the privileges of the UK to those here illegally.
Three of the UK Border Agency’s priorities are directly related to enforcement activities. These are:
- an effective approach to managing the identity of foreign nationals, requiring them to have secure, unique identification in order to cross our borders, to help manage migration and cut illegal working
- cross-government enforcement action, including identity cards, to shut down fraudulent access to benefits and services and tackle illegal working
- removal of those people not entitled to be here more quickly, using the best of the public and private sectors

Enforcement
- persons refused entry at ports, including juxtaposed controls (and those subsequently removed)
- enforcement action initiated against individuals
- persons proceeded against for offences under the Immigration Acts
- persons removed as a result of enforcement action, including voluntary departures after enforcement action had been initiated
Detention
- snapshot details of persons detained on a particular day, including length of detention
- details of persons recorded as being removed on leaving detention each quarter
Removals
- persons leaving the UK under Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) schemes
- asylum and non-asylum voluntary departures and removals from the UK

Research provides the evidence we need to develop policy and our knowledge base on key areas in enforcement including:
- compliance
- deterrence
- detection
- detention
- deportation
