International work


We are actively involved in international initiatives and organisations dealing with migration and asylum. This work helps the UK Border Agency to meet its objectives, through:

• international collaboration
• maintaining up-to-date knowledge
• encouraging a strategy for more harmonised statistics

This makes comparisons of statistics, research and administrative processes easier across the EU and worldwide.

Who we work with

We collaborate and play an active role in the following:

• The European Migration Network (EMN)
  The EMN aims to improve the availability of, and access to, information about migration and asylum at European and Member State level. This supports policy-making in the EU. We are a founding member of the network.   
• IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion Network of Excellence)
  IMISCOE is a multi-disciplinary research programme comprising more than 500 researchers from 23 European research institutes. They work together to:
  • create a joint research programme on migration. integration and social cohesion
  • organise training in these fields
  • disseminate research results to the public and specifically to policy makers.
  We are represented on the External Advisory Committee of IMISCOE.
  
• The International Metropolis Project
  This worldwide network is a forum for bridging research, policy and practice on migration and diversity. The project aims to:
  • enhance academic research capacity
  • encourage policy-relevant research on migration and diversity issues
  • facilitate the use of that research by governments and non-governmental organisations.
  It holds the largest annual conference in this field. We are represented on the International Steering Committee of Metropolis.
  
• EuroStat
• The Intergovernmental Consultations on Asylum, Refugees and Migration Policies (IGC)
• The Organisation for Economic Co-ordination and Development (OECD)
• The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

Latest projects

Recently we have worked on:

• negotiating the EU Legal Base for EMN.
• producing UK reports for the European Migration Network (EMN), including annual statistics and annual policy reports and specific studies on important topics in asylum and migration.
• negotiating the EU Regulation on harmonised statistics.
