Patterns of Crime

The Patterns of Crime Programme covers three main areas of work:

  1. Crime Surveys. This mainly covers the British Crime Survey. The BCS collects information on crime trends, independent of police recording and reporting practices. The survey also collects information on relative crime risks and public attitudes to crime related issues.

  2. Recorded Crime Statistics. This is mainly the statistical series on notifiable offences crimes recorded by the police, although other statistics are dealt with (eg, on police strength, and complaints against the police), and ad-hoc analyses of police statistics.

  3. The Review of Crime Statistics. This covers work with data users, police forces and the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) to improve the standard of crime recording, including the continuing development of guidance and the effective use of information technology.
