Investigations

Our research programme helps to improve police performance in the detection of crime and investigations – areas central to police work.

Police investigations are often complex and resource intensive. They cover serious crime and more routine investigation of volume crimes. The use of forensic science techniques has become increasingly important in the investigation of both serious and volume crime in recent years.

A key area of performance for police forces is the successful investigation and detection of offences. There is considerable variation between individual forces in their detection rates for individual crime categories. Our research has looked at what combination of factors influence detection rates in volume crimes. The main focus of the programme of work is on burglary and vehicle crime (theft of and theft from vehicles). Other work has examined the investigation of more serious offences such as rape and homicide.

Forensic science

Forensic science and related technology has the potential to play a key role in support of the Home Office’s objectives, particularly in improving police investigative performance. We have conducted a number of research projects focusing on how forensic science might be used to increase the number of crimes that are detected and brought to justice and the cost/speed at which those successes are achieved.
