Prisons

For statistics click here.

Long-term forecasts which project the growth of the prison population over the next eight years are published annually as one of the series of Statistical Bulletins.

RDS also manages or carries out research for the Home Office, the Prison Service, the Parole Board and many other bodies involved in the administration of criminal justice in the UK and in England and Wales. Current research in progress includes

  • research on drugs strategy in prisons
  • study of reconvictions to support drugs treatment programmes in prisons
  • research on pre-release programmes in prisons and resettlement issues
  • discipline in prison

Most of this research is published on completion as reports or as shorter four-page Research Findings.
