Reducing Burglary Initiative

The Reducing Burglary Initiative (RBI) aimed to:

  • reduce burglary nationally by targeting areas with the worst domestic burglary problems
  • evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the different approaches
  • find out what works best where

The initiative was launched in 1999 and ran for three years. It funded 247 burglary reduction projects, covering over 2.1 million households suffering around 110,000 burglaries a year. It also funded three distraction burglary projects.

The first round of the initiative incorporated 63 projects and these have been extensively researched by three consortia of universities. Further projects from Rounds 2 and 3 are also being evaluated.
