The initiative was launched in 1999 and ran for three years. It funded 247 burglary reduction projects, covering over 2.1 million households suffering around 110,000 burglaries a year. It also funded three distraction burglary projects.
The first round of the initiative incorporated 63 projects and these have been extensively researched by three consortia of universities. Further projects from Rounds 2 and 3 are also being evaluated.
